Newcomers Guide to America

Newcomers guide to America - the origins

Let me tell you a few words about myself. My background is Hungarian. I was born and lived in Europe all my life, except for the last few years since I moved to America. I recall my very first visit to America. I just got my visa and I was very excited. Just a few days before my first transatlantic flight. I had lots of questions in my head: How is America ? How different is it, compared to Europe ? How are the people? What's life like, there? And lots of others. I went online for answers. I found tons of information, but nothing about the basics. Sounds familiar?

Then, I called some old buddies who already visited America, a few of them even more than once. And you know, I was very surprised, most of them were not able to answer even some of my most basic questions. They told me stories, experiences, what a cool place America is, how much money you can make, but were not able to give me a simple general overview of America , it's people, the lifestyle, etc. All they told me was: "America is different, you will see". And so, I did.

Seems to me that simple things are harder to grasp because they are simple. Everyone should know them. But I just discovered something: just because are simple and basic, most people overlook them, and nobody explains them because "everyone supposed to know that". Right?

Looking back now, I understand. To really go to the basics you have to spend some time in America, be here and live here as an American. You have to be part of the society to discover the fine details.

Some answers you will find here

You'll will get an overview of America and American life from a non-American viewpoint. I will guide you through the very basics, those obvious things most Americans don't pay too much attention to, because they were born into it, or simply because they never had to face situations you will have to face as a non-American citizen. Little things like:

  • How to obtain your legal documents, your US Social Security Number, picture ID and drivers licence.

  • What is the process of getting a worker's visa?

  • How to open a bank account in America, even without a Social Security Number.

  • What is the difference between a checking account and a savings account?

  • How to obtain your first credit card fast and easy. For me, being a newcomer this was one of the hardest things to achieve. With lots of trial and error it took me months plus expenses. I show ways how you can get your first credit card right away.

  • How to rent an apartment?

  • What is the renting process? It might be VERY different from what you have in your home country. I will show you the possible problems you might encounter, and of course how to overcome them.

  • How to save money on long distance and international phone calls. How you can call your friends in your home country cheap? Insight into the available calling cards and prices.

  • How to buy your first car? How to buy from a dealer? How to buy from private persons? How to negotiate? How to prevent rip-offs?

  • Where you can find quality resources on car buying, repairs, insurance?
