Everything should be fine now

We just moved the site to a new, faster server to better serve the needs of the community. With this the error messages should have gone away. If you still see anything broken, or something doesn't work please drop me a line using the contact form.

Site error messages

I just noticed, that some users get error messages on the site, which shows up in pink error messages on the top of the page. I am working presently to get this fixed.

For the future, if any error message pops up on the site, or you notice that someting is not working as it should be expected, please notify me so I can get this fixed. The above error messages were present on the site for several days because it appeared only on special circumstances for a group of users only; unfortunatelly not for me.

Sending money

When you start working in the US, whether legally or illegally, you will face this question sooner or later: how to send your money home safely, fast and without paying a fortune in fees.

Well, here are a few options to send money from the US to practically any country of the world.

Packing, luggage

Pack your belongings in two categories: use a small backpack or bag for personal items what you want to take with you onboard, and the rest can go in the big suitcase.

Most airlines allow passengers to carry onboard 2 hand luggages, typically a smaller handbag or a roller bag, and/or a laptop. Depending on the size of the airplane and the size of the luggage compartment flight personnel might force you to check in larger carry-on bags.

Applying for green card

Applying for green card is an important step on the road of you becoming "American". As a green card holder or permanent resident, you and your immediate family can live and work in the United States for the rest of your lives. Most people obtain green cards by being sponsored by their employers or their relatives. Other people obtain permanent residence through the green card lottery, through asylum and through various other means. The main ways of applying for green card are:

Social security card

The Social Security Card is a blue paper card with your name on it and a special identification number on it called Social Security Number. You never change your SSN, it stays with you for a lifetime.

You are required to apply for your Social Security Number (SSN) when you start your first job. SSN are issued by the Social Security Administration.

Drivers license

A Drivers License is a card which allows you to operate a motor vehicle legally. A drivers license is issued by the state in which you live but allows you to drive anywhere in the United States and Canada. A drivers license is also the major form of official identification in the USA.

In order to enter the US you will need a visa. There are lots of visas available. Their types are denoted by various letters and numbers. Some of them allows you to work, but most of them don't. There are a few visa types which allow "dual status", which means you can both work and in the same time file your papers for the permanent residency (also called "green card"). Some visas can be obtained with relative ease, while others are limited in number and can take months of waiting to get it approved.

Here is a list of the main visa types.

Citizenship

There are three ways to acquire US citizenship:

  1. By birth in the US or in one of US territories

  2. By birth outside the US to certain US citizens

  3. By naturalization through the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)

Working in the USA

The most common workers visa in the US is the H1-B visa type. This is called a "non-immigrant visa" because it's a temporary visa which allows you to stay in the US employed legally by a US company for up to six years.
